Film Reflection- Get Out
Eugenics and Beauty
In the film Get Out , multiple example pulled from the American black experience are revealed though informal conversations made by upper class oppressors. This film is a portrayal of the unconscious racism tied to stereotypes about the black community. Although the villains of this film aren’t foreseen as ‘traditional racist’ villains. Their race-related commentary reveals substantial horror behind racism. This visual response piece represents the disembodiment of black bodies in our current era.
Settle race remarks between the protagonist and antagonists of the film conveys the obsession towards a person’s ethnicity. Race is defined as a social construct and is used as a tool to enable a system of oppression. Although some say, our country is united by nationalism and racism is extinct. This film says otherwise, and I agree. Stereotypes are used to control and conquer, even if they are positive. Throughout the film the protagonist, Chris is seen as a meat market for his existence. Because of his existence, he attracts attention towards the structure of his body, 20/20 vision and sex appeal. For example, at the dinner party a couple introduces a conversation about fashion that was regarding about Chris’s skin complexion. In the background of this visual response are quotes from the film and are placed in the background to bring anxiety towards my self-portrait. The overlay of black space is used to personify the feeling of disembodiment tied to the black experience and introduces elements of eugenics.
