The MISCONCEPTION of Representation

2019

“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.”

-Maya Angelou

In my perfect world, the diversity of culture would be celebrated throughout our Western education system. We would understand that our differences make us who we are and being an individual would be honorable. The problems I see in this Western Society correspond with social diseases, including racism, sexism, and homophobia. We are infected by these issues in our education system through the act of limiting the exposure of multicultural experiences. As a result, the lack of representation erases their story and changes the narrative in history.

My mission is to bring awareness towards encouraging individuality in the media industry by focusing on representation by revisiting eras that have inspired popular culture. In total, there are three parts of this series that are inspired by the imagery of the Renaissance Era, 1960s disco, and 1980s punk. Each photo series embraces the beauty of diversity in a modern tone. Through my digital lens, I wanted to display imagery of celebrating black beauty as well as embracing intersectionality. Each shot is intentional, I made this decision to be concise as possible while being radical and filling in the gap of where intersectional representation was needed.

Chapter 1

The modern gaze of the juxtaposition between The Renaissance Era and when the Moors Ruled Europe from ~711 AD until 1492.

Chapter 2

Inspired by Diana Ross and Cher. These two women defined the importance of self-love and revealing the impact of being courageous while staying in character.

Chapter 3

Inspired by the famous musician Prince, this chapter invites the conversation of individuality. Prince’s style is a combination of funk, punk with a touch of opulence that redefines beauty standards.

After completing this project, it inspired me to create a platform that will bring awareness to untold stories and open opportunities for self-expression. This is just the beginning and I’m unbelievably thankful for having a strong support system that pushed me to embrace my calling.

I’m so thankful to have an amazing creative team that helped put this project together.
